As part of its ongoing initiative to address positive school climate and emotional intelligence, New Canaan Public Schools joins with the district’s East, South, West and Saxe Schools’ Parent Teacher Councils and the New Canaan High School Parent Faculty Council in presenting a lecture by Dr. Robert Brooks, at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan.

His lecture is entitled “Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents” and is designed for parents with children in K-12. Anxiety and stress in children and adolescents appear to be increasing at an alarming rate, and Dr. Brooks is one of today’s leading speakers on the themes of self-esteem, motivation, resilience and family relations. Admission is free.

Dr. Robert Brooks is an author, psychologist and faculty member of Harvard Medical School. He has lectured nationally and internationally to audiences of parents, educators, mental health and business professionals. In his presentation, Dr. Brooks will describe factors that help children and adolescents to deal more effectively with stress and develop resiliency. He will outline specific strategies that parents and other adults can use to nurture responsibility, hope, kindness and resilience in children and adolescents. Dr. Brooks has authored or co-authored 17 books.

These include: “Raising Resilient Children”; “Raising a Self-Disciplined Child”; “Seven Steps to Help Your Child Worry Less”; “Angry Children”; “Worried Parents: Seven Steps to Help Families Manage Anger”; “Seven Steps to Improve Your Child’s Social Skills”; and “Understanding and Managing Children’s Classroom Behavior: Creating Sustainable, Resilient Classrooms”. Dr. Brooks received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Clark University and completed additional training at the University of Colorado Medical School. Besides being on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, he has served as Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital.
