AP World History: Modern – Summer Reading Assignment

Welcome to AP World History: Modern! To set the stage for our year-long exploration of global history from 1200 CE to the present, this summer reading project is designed to build a strong foundation in both historical thinking and global context.

Part One of the assignment introduces you to key themes in world history through the first section of The Origins of the Modern World by Robert Marks. This reading offers a thought-provoking look at the global forces—environmental, economic, and political—that shaped the transition to the modern era. As you read, you’ll be asked to consider how Mark's challenges traditional Eurocentric narratives and frames global interactions from a more interconnected perspective. Be sure to take detailed notes on the reading, as these will be essential for class discussions and assignments at the start of the year.

Part Two focuses on the world's major belief systems—Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. You’ll complete comparison charts to analyze their core beliefs, practices, and historical development. You’ll also trace the geographic diffusion of each religion through a series of historical maps, helping you build essential spatial awareness and see how ideas spread across regions and time.

Together, these two components will prepare you to dive into the AP curriculum with critical context, global awareness, and historical literacy.
