2026 best schoo district communities for music education namm foundation

New Canaan Public Schools has been named a District Award Winner in The NAMM Foundation’s 2026 Best Communities for Music Education. The Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) Awards, now in its 27th year of recognition, honors both districts and individual schools across the country for their commitment to advancing music education through high-quality, inclusive student access.

“Our visual and performing arts program has long been a source of pride for our school district, and this national recognition is another indicator of our district's commitment to providing all children a world-class educational experience,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Bryan Luizzi. “Our program’s great success is reflective of our student’s engagement, our community's support, and the dedication and commitment of our talented faculty and staff. Congratulations and thank you!”

Recipients of the 2026 BCME Awards were selected through a comprehensive application and review process that evaluates key indicators, including funding, instructional time, participation rates, facilities and community support. To be considered, K-12 districts must demonstrate outstanding achievement across multiple areas, including curriculum offerings, student access and participation, and teacher qualifications. Additionally, the NAMM Foundation also examines relevant district data, such as class size ratios, standards for assessing music curriculums and graduation requirements related to the arts.

“This recognition celebrates more than our music programs,” said Visual and Performing Arts Director, Laura Newell. “In New Canaan, we value giving every student the opportunity to create, perform, and feel a sense of belonging. Music plays a vital role in shaping a connected and vibrant school community, and this honor reinforces our commitment to supporting the whole child through the arts”.

New Canaan Public Schools offers a comprehensive music program for students in grades K-12, beginning in one of the district’s three elementary schools and continuing through to New Canaan High School. Across all grades levels, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of musical disciplines, including instrument work, singing, and a wide range of elective offerings for advanced learning that support a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
