New Canaan Public Schools’ South Elementary School is celebrating a milestone year as it marks the 75th anniversary of its founding. Since opening its doors in September 1950, South School has been a cornerstone of the community, educating and inspiring generations of students while serving as a gathering place for families, educators, and neighbors throughout New Canaan.

To celebrate the occasion, the school is hosting several special events this spring, beginning with a community Fun Run/Walk on Friday, May 1, from 4:30–6:00 p.m. The event is open to the entire New Canaan community, including alumni, former faculty and staff, current families, and of course, South School students.

The Fun Run/Walk will begin in the Farm Road parking lot and take place on and around South School’s campus. Participants can choose to jog or stroll around the school grounds during the approximately 25–30 minute run/walk window, allowing each participant to go as far as their pace allows.

Following the run/walk, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy music from DJ Nico, visit an ice cream truck, and spend time connecting with fellow members of the South School community.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by completing the event form here: South School 75th Fun Run / Walk Registration Link by Friday, April 24. A $7.50 participation fee will help offset event costs and support the South School Parent Teacher Council (PTC).

Additional Anniversary Events

Two additional events will round out South School’s 75th anniversary celebrations later this spring.

On Thursday, May 7, from 5:00–6:30 p.m., South School will host its Annual Art Show and Open House, where student artwork will be displayed alongside historical artifacts highlighting the school’s rich history. Community members who have South School memorabilia they would like to contribute to the display are encouraged to contact the South School main office to coordinate.

South School will also participate in the town’s Memorial Day Parade. Alumni, families, current students, and current and former faculty and staff are invited to march alongside the school. Those interested in joining can sign up here: South School Memorial Day Parade Participation Form Link.

As the school year comes to a close, South School looks forward to celebrating this “pawsome” milestone with the entire community while honoring the generations of students, staff, and families who have helped shape its legacy.
