NEW CANAAN, CT (January 12, 2024) - The Society for Science recently announced New Canaan High School Senior, Luke Huang, as one of their top 300 scholars in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search. This recognition is one of the highest awards a high schooler can earn, with winners awarded a $2,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete as a finalist and present their ideas at a nationwide level.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search is the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The competition recognizes promising student scientists researching ideas that could make extraordinary contributions to the world's most pressing scientific issues.
According to the Society of Science, scholars were selected from a pool of 2,126 applications from 712 high schools across 46 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and other countries. Entries can be submitted within 19 different research categories, with research projects ranging from machine learning to climate change, drug discovery, and more.
This year's top categories were Computational Biology, Medicine & Health, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Environmental Science, and Cellular & Molecular Biology, which includes Huang's submission titled Binary Cellular Analysis: Understanding the Link Between Aging and Mortality Risk.
"I’m absolutely thrilled to be recognized as a 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar", said Huang. "... It's incredibly fulfilling to apply my scientific skills towards addressing real-world problems, and I'm hopeful that this will inspire more high school students to pursue similar paths."
Each entry is reviewed by three or more Ph.D. scientists, engineers, or mathematicians based on the subject area of entry. Winners are chosen based on various factors, including research and leadership skills, curiosity, innovation, academic commitment, and extracurricular activity.
"We are incredibly excited for Luke. This is a great honor, and we are proud of his hard work and continued dedication to science," said Michael LeDuc, Teacher and Chair of the New Canaan High School Science Department.
Huang also wanted to give special thanks to the members at NCHS who helped support him during his entry. " I am so thankful for the unwavering support I've received from our school, especially Mr. Reid, whose guidance and enthusiasm have been priceless," said Luke Huang.
On January 24, 2024, The Top 40 Finalists of the 300 student scholars will be selected, where they will then compete for more than 1.8 million in awards in a week-long competition in Washington, D.C. The Top 10 Winners of that group will be announced at the Regeneron Science Talent Award Ceremony on March 12, 2024.

Update 1/24/24: Luke Huang has moved forward in the competition and has placed in the top 40 National Finalists in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search. According to the Society for Science, "Over 2,100 high school seniors conducted independent research in diverse scientific fields and completed a rigorous application, and 40 finalists were selected for their potential for future leadership in STEM. Each finalist receives $25,000 and this March will compete for an additional $1.8 million in awards, including the top prize of $250,000. "
