Dear families, in 8th grade we offer grade-level and advanced courses in french, latin, and spanish. currently, the mandarinprogram consists of a hybrid 8th grade course. although there is no strict formula for success in our courses, teachers review the following areas of focus when making recommendations to the high school level. these include a proficiency with skills and content a novice mid-high level, academic work habits with classwork and homework, potential success with increased pacing, understanding of abstract/complex concepts, levels of independence in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and individual initiative and the ability to approach course work independently. in order to asses these qualities, the 8th grade placement teams have considered the following in-house metrics when making a placement determination as outlined in our recommended flow process for each language on our ncps world language website. this includes 8th grade overall performance (not just the letter grade) in the world language course and performance on end-of-unit assessments and benchmark-pacing assessments. The 9th grade World Language placements are made by world language teachers to ensure all students' optimal social, emotional, and academic development while inspiring a life-long passion and appreciation for languages and cultures. if your child is not recommended for the honor class, there are still opportunities for them to enter and honors course throughout their high school years. the 9th grade world language teacher will continue to extend opportunities for students and help them reach their maximum potential. There are a myriad of opportunities for students in World Languages to take advantage of and we encourage the student and their family to keep open lines of communication with the student's world language teacher and school counselor to ensure that each student realizes thier own version of success. kind regards, the eight grade world language team
