World Languages Grades 6-8

Our goal for students is that by the end of Grade 8 they will be speaking and writing at an Intermediate-Low proficiency as defined by ACTFL. This will support their success in achieving the CT Seal of Biliteracy in high school.

Spanish Grades 6-8

Our goal for students is that by the end of Grade 8 they will be speaking and writing at Novice-Mid/Novice-High proficiency as defined by ACTFL. This will support their success in achieving the CT Seal of Biliteracy in high school. Similar to our elementary program, our middle school Spanish program is proficiency based.

We work diligently to support students in learning language to enable students to effectively use their new language to share their thoughts and opinions, orally and in writing. In addition, students will be able to gather information by listening or reading in the target language.

All students at the end of Grade 8 will take the AAPPL assessment in writing and speaking to benchmark their progress in the program thus far.

All grades will explore and engage students in the vast and beautiful cultures and perspectives that the Spanish speaking world has to offer.

French Grades 6 - 8

Our goal for students is that by the end of Grade 8 they will be expected to speak and write at a Novice Mid/Novice High proficiency level as defined by ACTFL. This will support their success in achieving the CT Seal of Biliteracy in high school.

All students at the end of Grade 8 will take the AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language) assessment in writing and speaking to benchmark their progress in the program thus far.

In addition, students will be able to use their new language to exchange and share their opinions both orally and in writing as well as acquire information by listening and reading in the target language.

Chinese/Mandarin Grades 6-8

Chinese is the most spoken language in the world.  The study of Chinese will help students bridge the cultural gap and create a platform of knowledge and understanding with the people who speak the language.

Learning the language at the middle school level is effective and fun.  Our goal for Mandarin students at SAXE is that by the end of Grade 8 they will be expected to speak and write at a Novice Mid/Novice High proficiency level as defined by ACTFL. This will support their success in achieving the CT Seal of Biliteracy in high school.

Students will be able to use the target language to exchange and share their opinions both orally and in writing as well as acquire information by listening and reading in the target language.

Latin Grades 6-8

At the end of Grade 8, students are expected to be able to read Latin at a Novice-Mid/Novice-High proficiency as defined by ACTFL.

Students take the ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading Assessment (ALIRA) to monitor their progress. This assessment asks students to read a variety of Latin texts and follows up with different comprehension questions. It is a timed test, assessing a student's ability to read and comprehend, not translate.

As a result, our units all include different reading strategies for students to use and implement as early as grade 6.

Our program is also influenced in part by the curriculum put forth by the American Classical League. https://www.nle.org/ .
