The World Language Department strives to equip our students with the linguistic and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in a world of increasingly interconnected peoples. We believe the study of world languages and cultures increases global awareness and gives students the ability to understand and, empathize, and respond effectively to issues as they relate to working with people from different cultures and who speak a different language.

Our goal is to have students speaking and writing at a proficiency, defined by ACTFL, that will allow them to achieve the CT Seal of Biliteracy while in high school. For more information on available languages and goals by grade, please view the NCHS World Languages Program of Studies.

The New Canaan Public Schools K-12 World Language Department nurtures and supports life-long learning in our students and for ourselves. Our staff is professional, passionate, innovative and creative. We believe that to be a successful department we must be respectful of other’s opinions, collaborative, flexible and accountable to each other and our students.

In addition to our World Language teachers and staff, The New Canaan High School language lab facility allows students to experience the language they are studying in many different ways. The lab environment provides effective, efficient and individualized practice that lets students take advantage of varied learning capacities, (i.e. auditory, visual, and tactile). Students benefit from real-life situations in the target language, view and listen to authentic materials from a variety of foreign countries, perform paired and group activities free from distractions and much more.
