“Time to pARTy” New Canaan High School’s 34th Annual Senior Art Show

The Thirty-fourth Annual Senior Art Show entitled “Time to pARTy”, marks a very special experience for a group of New Canaan High School seniors. Along with a virtual representation of their senior portfolios, each student will have one artwork on display in the NCHS High School Art Gallery.

The exhibition celebrates the creative accomplishments of NCHS senior art students and consists of seventeen one-person retrospectives in a variety of media including drawing, painting, photography, digital media, and film. The exhibition is being presented through a video link and will be made available to view May 10th through June 10th by clicking the following links:

The Senior Art Show allows students to generate a one-person exhibit that is entirely their own creation. The student responsibilities include creating a themed title and poster/logo for the exhibit, planning and creating the virtual video, generating publicity, and selecting their work for the show.

Claudia Stanley was the student coordinator, Paige Stein, Mallory Hart, and Jacob Scola all contributed to the poster/logo design, and Ethan Jones, in collaboration with NCHS Film students, created the virtual exhibition videos. The following students are featured in the show: William Besgen, Julia Carpi, Wesley Cloud, Demetria Dresser, Annie Gong, Mallory Hart, Ethan Jones, Neya Krishnan, Valerie O’Neill, Chloe Piegat, Ava Sabloff, Jacob Scola, Kaitlyn Sill, Claudia Stanley, Paige Stein, Riley Wilson, and Claudia Zhu.

NCHS’s senior show is unique in that it challenges each student to present his or her work as a one-person “retrospective” that can be drawn from any artwork that has been created throughout their high school years. The organization of this exhibit is meant to draw attention to each student’s individual portfolio and distinctive artistic style creating their personal “voice”. The challenge of evaluating and choosing one’s own work is exciting and demanding to the artistically talented students. Many of our seniors are planning to pursue their artistic talents at the college level next year.

Advising students on the planning and organizing of the event were their art teachers, Jeanne McDonagh, Jennifer Sinski, and Kimanne Core.

The senior exhibition will also give three seniors an opportunity to have their work purchased for the NCHS Fritz Eager Foundation for Art Education Art Collection. The purchased works of art will then be on permanent display throughout the high school and the NCPS district offices. This art collection began in 1969 in the memory of New Canaan High School art student Fritz (Frederick) Eager. The Fritz Eager selection committee is composed of two high school administration and eight professional artists.
