It has certainly felt like winter this week! Here are some East winter updates:
Dates to Remember
Monday, January 17th - No School in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Friday, January 21st - Friday, January 28th - STEM Week (learn more below and more details coming soon!)
Joint PTC Meeting with Dr. Luizzi
On Tuesday of this week, our East, South and West School PTC’s joined the elementary principals in welcoming Superintendent Dr. Bryan Luizzi, and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jill Correnty, for a presentation of the 2021-2022 Superintendent's Proposed Budget. During the meeting, Dr. Luizzi provided details about the budget, including enrollment projections, various metrics that showcase the quality of our district and schools about our schools, overall budget drivers and some exciting new additions to the budget, including our Innovation Initiative.
The drop-off lines in the morning have been a bit longer this week. We ask that families please remember the following guidelines to help us keep our lines moving as efficiently as possible for all:
Students must exit on the passenger side of the car; drivers are to remain in the car.
Students are to have their mask on when their car pulls up to the front platform. This allows your child to exit the car promptly.
All cars should enter from the Silvermine entrance to Little Brook Rd. If the line is longer than the drop-off lane in the front loop, please turn into the “new circle” to weave the line through that circle as well (see traffic flow map below). This traffic pattern worked well for us last year, moves the line of cars off of Little Brook Rd in the morning, and allows our buses to pass easily.
We try each day to bring students outdoors for recess and mask breaks. Please be sure your child brings warm winter clothing to school (coats, hat, mittens/gloves). When we have snow on the ground, students are allowed to play in the snow only if they have brought snow pants and boots to school.
STEM Week COMING SOON!
STEM Week is an exciting opportunity for students to explore activities at home that integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in exciting (and fun!) ways. This year, East has planned a special STEM Week thanks to East math specialist, Mrs. Alison Pellicci, and with the support of the East PTC. Each East School family will receive a STEM kit on Friday, January 21st to use at home. Students can post their STEM experiences and discoveries on Flip Grid to share with others. Stay tuned for more details coming next week!
NCPS Attendance Communication Reminder
This information below was shared previously this winter, but there have been some questions from families regarding attendance letters. We hope the information below helps to clarify and reassure families. We continue to appreciate the attention that families are giving to student health and wellness and our COVID protocols, and we encourage families to communicate with us when their child is absent.
New Canaan Public Schools Board of Education practice, in accordance with federal and state school attendance statutes, calls for the generation of a reminder letter to parents of students who have reached their ninth absence for the school year. We suspended the distribution of these letters last year due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. We will commence with generating these letters again this year as a means to alert parents and school staff to carefully monitor students who meet this threshold, as we know that consistent attendance ensures fidelity of instruction which results in higher success and achievement for learners. A sample NCPS Attendance letter for your reference.
We do still request that parents of children who are demonstrating any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 or other illnesses keep them home from school. Additionally, we strongly encourage all NCPS families to adhere to the school calendar when making family travel plans in order to maximize student time in the classroom learning environment.
If you have any questions related to this practice or attendance policies, please contact Mrs. Woleck, East Principal, or Mrs. Fruin, East Assistant Principal.
