What's Happening @ East? January 21, 2021

January 21, 2021

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian:

Read on about our upcoming East STEM Week that will begin tomorrow!

Are you ready for a STEM-tastic week of fun?

From Friday January 22nd through Friday January 29th, East School will be participating in our first at-home STEM event. We have “re-imagined” our annual STEM Night at East to bring you the opportunity to learn about and have fun with STEM at home!

What is STEM? STEM integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into learning! Through STEM, students develop their creativity, critical analysis and problem solving, communication skills and perseverance.

Links to the selected STEM Week activities will be E-blasted to families this Friday (1/22) and will also be linked into your student’s Seesaw or Google Classroom accounts. Students can post to Flip Grid to share their thinking!

Are you ready to Race Candy? How about building a catapult? Do you know how to make a snowflake dance? These are just a few of the activities that have directions listed in the STEM packet! After you try out the experiments and activities, upload a video or picture to our Flip Grid so everyone can see.

For families that ordered STEM bags, these will be sent home on Friday with your child. If you were not able to order a STEM bag, you can gather the following items at home for the activities:

2 plates 2 balloons
Tissue paper Tape
30 popsicle sticks 10 straws
15 index cards 1 pack Skittles
1 pack Smarties 10 pipe cleaners
1 Plastic spoon 10 Rubber bands
1 pom pom puff

We’re looking forward to an exciting week of new learning and families having fun with STEM! Thanks to the EAST PTC for their continued support of this event.

Reminders

  • Our school day begins at 9:05AM. If you are dropping off your child, please plan to arrive by 9:00AM so that we can unload all cars by 9:05AM. Most importantly, this can ensure that all students begin their day with their classmates and teacher as a classroom community. Also, our staffing available to assist at the drop-off platform have instructional roles that begin at 9:05AM and so are not available to assist those arriving late.
  • If you are planning to travel to a state noted on the Connecticut Travel Advisory list over any weekend or the February vacation week, we encourage you to communicate with East staff prior to vacation. A quarantine period of 10 days following travel or documentation of negative COVID testing results is required based on the most recent CDC guidelines. Classroom teachers can provide the remote learning link to students who need to quarantine due to travel or while they are awaiting testing results, but it is helpful for teachers to be aware of the need for remote learning ahead of time to ensure that students have their devices, core materials, and access to the link. Also, our nurse, Liz Buckner, can assist families in finding testing locations ahead of travel to ensure a prompt COVID test for students returning from travel.
