What's Happening @ East? October 22, 2020

October 22, 2020

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian:

Tomorrow is PAJAMA DAY at East School as we get excited for the East PTC Wheels and Reels Drive-in Movie Night. Children may wear pajamas to school (please, no stuffed animals from home) but they must wear proper outdoor shoes with their pajamas (ie. feet pajamas still need shoes worn).  Classes will still be taking mask breaks and have recess outdoors so students need to have proper outdoor footwear for this. If you take any Pajama Day photos at home, please send along photos to our East PTC yearbook committee: eastyearbooknc@gmail.com

NC Fire Department visits East Kindergarten!

Our kindergarten students have been busy learning in their classrooms, but last Friday, they took their learning outside for a visit from the New Canaan Fire Department. They learned important fire and emergency safety tips, including 911 and responding to smoke detectors at home. We appreciate the partnership with the community and thank the New Canaan Fire Department for their willingness and flexibility to bring their equipment and expertise to our kindergarteners.

Fall "Check-Ins"

Over the next month, students across grade levels will have multiple opportunities to “check-in” on their learning as teachers make use of a variety of tools to monitor student learning and progress across subject areas. These assessments are embedded into our instructional practice throughout the year in order to collect important information on student growth and to ensure that student needs are met. Evidence of student growth is collected in a variety of different ways in the form of student work samples, one-to-one conferences, paper and pencil tasks, formal assessments, and through the innovative use of technology. These offer students multiple opportunities to demonstrate new learning and understanding over time. In turn, the information is used to inform instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. We approach this work with a strengths-based philosophy, always looking for each student’s strength and using it to strengthen other areas. This valuable information will be shared with parents during our December conferences.

Halloween@ East

Earlier this week, we shared information regarding our Crazy Hair Day for Friday, October 30th. We hope that this will be a fun theme-day for students here at East; they are welcome to dress in Halloween colors as well. We do ask that students not wear costumes to school on this day, as costumes can become a safety issue and can also be distracting in the classroom when worn for the full school day. We understand this may be disappointing to some families but we ask for your cooperation as we continue to ensure that health and safety is our priority.

Gentle Reminders

  • When dropping off your child in the morning, we ask for your patience in the drop-off line. Unless there is an extenuating circumstance requiring assistance, please do not park and walk through the parking lot with your child. This is for the safety of all.

  • If you arrive early for pick-up (we appreciate your patience), we encourage you to turn off your car while waiting in your car to avoid idling for long periods of time. Thank you!

  • To address questions regarding the criteria for students to return to school following illness, please refer to Addendum 5 provided on the NCPS Charting Our Course website (page 2 of the Addendum presents a chart for reference).

  • If your child is sick, has rested for 24 hours, and is moving to temporary remote learning while symptoms are monitored or resolving, the office must be notified by 8AM of the temporary remote learning request.

  • At arrival, please have your child’s mask on prior to pulling up to the entrance platform where cars unload and please ensure that your child is ready to exit the car promptly (backpack close by, etc.). This will allow us to continue the flow of traffic in the morning.

  • If a technology issue arises for your child, please send an email to the district technology support staff using the email address: studenthelpdesk@ncps-k12.org . Classroom teachers are teaching throughout the day and are not able to respond to emails in the moment to troubleshoot technology issues.
