A smooth start

September 3, 2020

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian:

Thank you for your partnership as we welcomed students back to school this week. Our students brought joy and energy to us all! It was a smooth start to the year as students worked hard to learn and practice new routines to keep themselves and others healthy and safe while learning. We appreciate the cooperation, flexibility, and patience of our families as we all navigate these new ways together.

We now look ahead to next week and the beginning of remote learning for our cohorts. The schedule for the week of September 8th for grades 1-4 is below:

Monday, 9/7 Tuesday, 9/8 Wednesday, 9/9
Early Release @ 12:05PM
Thursday, 9/10 Friday, 9/11

No School - Labor Day
X cohort @East X cohort @East (dismissal at 12:05PM) Y cohort @East Y cohort @East

*** All kindergarten students will continue to attend school daily on their half-day, AM (X cohort) or PM (Y cohort) schedule. Please note that the Kindergarten Y cohort will have no school on Wednesday due to the early release day.

Remote Learning Expectations and Guidelines - Please read carefully.

As we move into days of remote learning for students in each cohort this week, please understand that this will be a live stream model implemented directly from the classroom, with instruction provided by your child’s classroom teacher (and specials area staff each day). Students are expected to log into their class Zoom link by 9:05AM each day and follow their teacher’s instruction and the class schedule throughout the full day. Work is to be completed by students during the class session as directed by the teacher; students will be using See-Saw (K-2) or Google Classroom (grades 3-4) for their work. Teachers will embed times when students work off-screen but the Zoom link should remain on. Attendance will be taken each morning and following transitions to ensure students are present and engaged at home throughout the day. Children will be marked absent if they are not present remotely for the instruction. If your child is unable to participate in remote learning on a given day, please call the Attendance line at school to report your child absent and indicate the reason.

Below are guidelines that we ask all families to review with their student to support success during remote learning:

  • Find a quiet space that will be designated for remote learning.

  • Be aware of what is in view on the camera behind you (a blank wall is best).

  • Unless you have permission from your teacher, you must be visible and keep the camera on.

  • Be on time to the session. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the period. If you are absent from school (streaming, hybrid or full remote) have your parents call the school absence line.

  • Dress appropriately. It is a school day and dressing appropriately helps you differentiate “school” time from “down” time.

  • Breakfast should be eaten prior to logging in. Lunch and snacks should be eaten during the class times for lunch and snack.

  • Use a headset or headphones (these have been provided with your device).

  • Do not record sessions.

  • Follow all other guidelines established by your teacher.

  • Parents should not participate in sessions unless prompted to do so by the teacher.

As teachers implement this model “live” for the first time in the weeks ahead, we appreciate your patience and understanding. If  your child experiences difficulties with their school issued device, the district has established a technology response team who are ready and able to help you with issues remotely.  To contact the team, send an email with the student’s name, grade, building and issue to studenthelpdesk@ncps-k12.org. We will problem-solve and troubleshoot as needed along the way, but please understand that some things may move more slowly than usual as we get this work underway.

Have a wonderful long weekend ahead,
