Between snow days, we had many happy readers comfy-cozy in their pajamas as they wrapped up our Reading Celebration last Monday with grade-level Reading Pajama Parties across the day. Each grade level took a turn with blankets, pajamas, and books in the East Galley to read, read, and read … independently, with a partner, and sometimes with more than one friend. It was a wonderful scene all day long in the Galley!

For those of you who have children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2017, invitations for Kindergarten Orientation were sent last week to those that have registered through the NCPS website. If you have not registered your child, please do so as soon as possible in order to be scheduled for a Kindergarten Orientation slot. Please pass this message on to any friends or neighbors that may have an incoming kindergartener. (If you have registered online but did not receive an Orientation invitation, please contact Kimberly Aponte in the East Office to verify that your registration information is in the system.)

NCPS Attendance policy

The district attendance policy can be found in our East School Handbook (which is available electronically on the East School website). Please note the following from the policy:

“Based on CT State attendance laws, a student's first 9 absences are treated the same whether they are excused (illness, etc.) or unexcused (vacation, etc.); that is, both excused and unexcused absences are counted towards the total number of absences for reporting purposes.”

Beginning this week, the New Canaan Public Schools will send electronic notification to families of all students who have 10 or more absences in the 2016-17 school year. This letter will also note the procedures that must be followed (based on State attendance laws) for any future absences for the child. Moving forward, families will receive notification proactively following the child’s 9th absence. Please know that we understand illnesses require time at home to rest and recover; we appreciate your cooperation in ensuring consistent attendance for your child beyond days of illness and we hope that this notification is helpful as you consider vacations or other events that may take your child out of school. Thank you for your cooperation, communication, and understanding.
