Happy New Year!

Maura and I hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful break with family and friends over the holidays. We are very much looking forward to a terrific 2017 with all of your children. Here’s to a terrific first month of the new year!

We have been fortunate with many mild days in November and December, but certainly the end of this past week reminded us that cold temperatures will be blowing in more and more. Please be sure your child brings a coat, hat, and gloves/mittens to school each day; remind your child that this outwear should be put on for dismissal as well (rather than carried home in backpacks). We do have both morning and lunch recess time each day as often as possible during the winter. There are times when factors such as extremely cold temperatures, a combination of temperatures and wind chills, or ice on the blacktop prevent us from going outside, but please send children “dressed for the weather” each day; even icy conditions in the morning could clear to allow us to bring students outside for lunchtime recess. image of students Also, when more snow arrives (gulp!), only students with boots and snow pants are allowed to play in the snow; we want to ensure that clothes remain dry so no one is uncomfortable when they return to the building after recess. Students wearing boots outside should be sure to bring a pair of sneakers to wear in school, as snow boots can be cumbersome, uncomfortable over time, and difficult to navigate when climbing up and down stairs in school.

Kindergarten Transition Meeting

It is hard to believe but we are already looking ahead to welcoming our incoming class of kindergarteners for the 2017-18 school year! A district-wide Kindergarten Transition Meeting will be held this Thursday, January 12th at 9:30 in the East School Galley. This is a meeting for parents of students that will begin kindergarten in the fall of 2017. It is an opportunity to learn about the registration process and an overview of our kindergarten program in New Canaan. Please pass the time and date of this meeting on to any neighbors or friends in the district with incoming kindergarteners!

Save the Date!

We have many exciting East evening events coming up to help us all enjoy these cold winter nights – be sure to mark your calendar:

  • Pasta Night / Bingo Night – January 20th (Snow date: January 27th) Be sure to make your reservations for Pasta Night on the PTC website!
  • STEM Night (A fun family night of science, technology, engineering, and math) – February 1st
  • Science Fair – February 4th (Snow date: February 11th)

Finally, we hope to see many of you this Tuesday morning (January 10th) at 9:30AM in the East galley. Dr. Bryan Luizzi, New Canaan Superintendent of Schools, will join us for a joint elementary PTC meeting to share with parents an overview of the 2017-18 budget. We will also welcome Dr. Jill Correnty, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Ms. Melinda Meyer, K-8 Science Coordinator, as they share with us information regarding our growing STEM program in the district. Hope you can join us for this very informative session!

Have a great week,
