Grade 9 News
JUNE 2022
Please remind your students to keep up their grades as we approach the end of this academic year. Happy Summer! Rest and recharge!
MAY 2022
Please encourage your freshman to keep up their grades through the end of the school year. Grades do count for college admission as they appear on the high school transcript along with the GPA. Improvement from semester to semester is also important, and the NCHS transcript shows a grade average for each year.

Improvement from semester to semester is also important, as the NCHS transcript shows grades from each semester.
MARCH 2022
We hope that all of our freshmen have now had their individual appointments with their School Counselors. If you have not received your child’s Academic Road Map that was discussed at the freshman appointment please email their counselor to receive a copy. As always, encourage students to see their counselor if they have questions or concerns.
FEBRUARY 2022
Counselors have completed their individual freshman appointments. We hope that students have shared their discussions with their parents. We have also completed our freshman program designed to focus on students’ individual learning styles. Each student completed an online Learning Styles Inventory through our Naviance post-high school planning software. They obtained information designed to help them explore their current study habits and consider how they might try some new strategies.
Please ask your student to share their results with you.
Freshmen may come to see us if they have any questions or concerns by stopping at Mrs. Poccia’s desk during walk-in time from 11:00 - 12:00 every day, or by requesting an appointment during a study hall or free period.
JANUARY 2022
Students: Be sure to check your school email every day and respond to emails sent to you!
If your son/daughter missed their Freshman Appointment, they may re-schedule with Mrs. Poccia in the School Counseling Office. This is an important opportunity for freshmen to get to know their counselor and to go over their Academic Road Map for the four years of high school!
DECEMBER 2021
Counselors meet with their students for a variety of reasons. Please reassure your student that if they receive an email asking for them to see their counselor it is not a sign that they “are in trouble.” We may want to congratulate them on a wonderful performance in a play or let them know that we have heard from a teacher that they did well on an assignment. There are times when we want to see how we can help following a low grade on a report card but these meetings are always to offer positive help or advice.
If your freshman missed their Freshman Appointment with their School Counselor, please ask them to see our secretaries who can reschedule this meeting.
Winter vacation is a good time to take stock of how your daughter/son is performing in classes this year. Are they visiting teachers for extra help? Are assignments always handed in on time and thoroughly completed?
Please suggest that your child uses this break to rest and regroup. Remind them of the goals that they set and their progress towards meeting them. Hopefully they can find some unassigned time to find a book of interest and enjoy reading for fun!
NOVEMBER 2021
Counselors are visiting 9th Grade Health class visits to administer our Freshman Program and give students the opportunity to reflect upon their personal learning and study skills.
First quarter is over and your students have survived and hopefully flourished! The School Counselors are holding individual appointments with each of their freshman students beginning this month. Invitations are being sent via email from Maria Poccia with a date and time of your child’s appointment with their counselor. Have your son/daughter bring questions for us to discuss. We will also be working on a tentative four-year education plan to get your children into that cap and gown. If parents have questions, please call your individual counselor after your son/daughter’s meeting.
The time will probably come when your children will need extra assistance in a class. Please encourage them to go and see their teachers when they have difficulties. This is the single, most effective way to see their grades improve.
OCTOBER 2021
Counselors will be starting our individual Freshman Appointments in early November. Students will be notified of their date and time for this meeting. If the time is inconvenient, please ask your child to see Mrs. Poccia to reschedule and also let their counselor know. These meetings are for the student and counselor to meet one on one, get to know each other and work on their academic four year plan. Parents are welcome to call us after this appointment or use email if they have questions.
AUG/SEPT 2021
Welcome to all of our freshmen students and parents! Students will be meeting counselors during Freshmen Orientation on the first day of school, and we will be starting our Freshman Program in early November. We use this program to begin to get to know our freshmen and answer any questions that they may have. Should there be a more immediate need to speak with a School Counselor, students should see Mrs. Poccia in the counseling office and ask to make an appointment to see their counselor, or they can email maria.poccia@ncps-k12.org. If this matter is URGENT, the student should indicate this and we will make every effort to see her/him as soon as possible. Parents are welcome to email counselors if they have questions.
- Freshmen Parent Virtual Orientation 6:30 pm Thursday September 9th 2020. Followed by Open House. More information and Zoom links will be forthcoming.
