Grade 10 News

DECEMBER 2021

Counselors meet with their students for a variety of reasons. Please reassure your student that if they receive an email asking for them to see their counselor it is not a sign that they “are in trouble.” We may want to congratulate them on a wonderful performance in a play or let them know that we have heard from a teacher that they did well on an assignment. There are times when we want to see how we can help following a low grade on a report card but these meetings are always to offer positive help or advice.

Winter vacation is a good time to take stock of how your daughter/son is performing in classes this year. Are they visiting teachers for extra help? Are assignments always handed in on time and thoroughly completed?

Please suggest that your child uses this break to rest and regroup. Remind them of the goals that they set and their progress towards meeting them. Hopefully they can find some unassigned time to find a book of interest and enjoy reading for fun!

NOVEMBER 2021

What should sophomores be doing?

Enjoy NCHS! Get involved! Try a new club, activity or sport to see if they like them. One day, very soon, they may be in a leadership role and we hope that they’ll embrace this responsibility.

Without adding to the pressure, grades do count no matter where students plan to go after graduation. Suggest that they get help from their teachers the minute they find the going rough. Encourage use of the NCHS Writing Center.

OCTOBER 2021

Many of the independent testing agencies are offering a PSAT to sophomore students. One of these is Summit Educational Group here in New Canaan. This practice test will be online and then scored by the testing agency. Summit is offering a testing window from October 14th to the 21st for sophomores to take the test. Look for the link to come soon via email.

Please encourage your sophomore to seek help from their teachers as needed. Each Tuesday we now have “Ram Time” at the end of the day, which provides students a great opportunity for seeing a teacher.

Encourage your sophomore to join an extracurricular activity and clubs. Information about these can be found on the NCHS website on the Co-Curricular Activities link.

The Club Fair takes place online on October 5th, and students will be directed to the Co-Curricular Activities website for information, videos and sign ups.

AUG/SEPT 2021

The PSAT will not be offered to sophomores at NCHS this year, however watch for information from Summit Educational Group. They will offer a practice PSAT for sophomores who are interested.

JUNE 2021
