School Start Times Survey conducted by NCPS
New Canaan community invited to take online School Start Times Survey

Continuing with its process of researching and understanding the connections between school start and end times and student health and wellness, New Canaan Public Schools is conducting an online School Schedule Survey for students, parents, staff, and the community. Parents, staff, and students have been emailed unique links to the survey.

The survey will be live until May 10, 2019.
The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback from all stakeholders to help inform the Board of Education in their continuing deliberations regarding a change to school start and end times at the district’s five (5) schools, and the survey will be live until May 10, 2019.
The survey instrument includes links to the district’s “School Start and End Times” webpage, which can be found through the district home page (www.ncps-k12.org). The webpage includes a timeline of work that has been done thus far and informative videos and articles for anyone interested in learning more.
The survey provides a number of school start and end time scenarios for review, followed by questions that ask what, if any, impact each option would have on aspects of a student’s experience. Upon conclusion, Hanover will share the aggregate data with the district to be presented to the BOE in June.
“In June, the Board of Education will continue its discussions on school start times considering the information provided in the survey and other data points. At that meeting, the Board anticipates providing guidance for the administration’s continued work over the summer.” said Dr. Luizzi. “As a district, we are committed to educating the whole child, and we feel it is our responsibility to continuously explore ways to improve the student experience on all levels at each of the district's five schools.”
The primary purpose of considering changes to school start times is to support student health and wellness. Research suggests that later start times for adolescent students can help them get more sleep, thereby strengthening their emotional intelligence and helping with decision-making, learning, and executive functioning.
To complement its ongoing research and analysis, the Board of Education administered an initial survey last spring to ascertain areas of potential concern when considering a change to school start times. Additionally, a Public Hearing on school start times was held in the fall of 2018.
“Throughout the process, the anticipated benefits of a change, the challenges of making a change, the complexity of the New Canaan school system, and the many considerations that must be accounted for in weighing a change continue to factor into our ongoing discussions and planning,” said Dr. Luizzi. “We have a rich ecosystem surrounding our schools at all levels, and we are committed to understanding the potential impacts a change could have on these activities and opportunities for our students as this process unfolds.”
