New Canaan Public Schools announces the retirement of South Elementary School Principal Joanne Rocco at the end of the school year. Beloved by students and parents, faculty, administrators, and the community at large, Ms. Rocco has been with New Canaan Public Schools for a total of 27 years and served as Principal at South School for the past 15 years.

Overall, Ms. Rocco has spent 40 years as an educator and has taught grades K-8 over the span of her teaching career. During her first 13 years as a teacher, Ms. Rocco was a middle school science teacher in Catholic Schools in Bridgeport, Trumbull and Stratford.

She started working in the New Canaan Public School District in 1992 as a science teacher at South School, when the school was K-5, and she taught science to all grades. She spent the next 6 years teaching science at South School and 1 year teaching 6th grade science at Saxe Middle School, before returning to South School as Assistant Principal for 5 years. She was named Principal at South in 2003.

In a letter to South Parents announcing her retirement last month, Ms. Rocco wrote:

My career in education has brought me more joy than I ever could have imagined. I have had the privilege of working with so many wonderful individuals, including colleagues, students and parents over the years. There is no better place to work than South School where there is so much laughter, learning and love packed into each day. Your children are precious to me, and my biggest regret is that I will not continue to see them grow over the years. I will miss their smiles, funny stories and daily adventures in school. It has been a pleasure walking into South School each day and seeing such happy, caring and amazing children who will someday change the world for the better. I thank you, their parents, for your investment in not only your child’s education, but in every child’s education and well-being. Your support for the students, staff and families at South School has been instrumental in creating this truly wonderful place for students to learn and grow.

With Gratitude,

Joanne Rocco
