At the November 19, 2018, Board of Education meeting to elect new officers, held at the Wagner Room at NCHS, the BOE elected Brendan Hayes as BOE Chair, Dionna Carlson as BOE Vice Chair, and Jennifer Richardson as BOE Secretary. First Selectman Kevin Moynihan officiated the election.
Brendan Hayes has served on the BOE since 2015 and has held the role of Chair of the Education Resources Committee since his election. He is a finance leader, and as a board member he was instrumental in the updating of the BOE’s facilities rental policies as well as being a consistent advocate throughout the board’s budget process. He is Senior Managing Director in Investment Banking at Guggenheim Securities, serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for Newcomb Tulane College at Tulane University, and has been a youth sports coach in New Canaan. He graduated from Tulane University with a BS in Mathematics and History and received his MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business. He and his wife Ainsley have 3 sons, ages 14, 11 and 8, and have lived in New Canaan for ten years.
“Brendan has been a thoughtful leader on the BOE,” said outgoing BOE Chair Dionna Carlson, who nominated Mr. Hayes, “and I enthusiastically endorse his nomination for Chair of the BOE.”
Dionna Carlson had served as BOE Chair from 2015 to 2018 and was BOE Secretary from 2013 to 2015. She is an active member of the BOE Educational Resources Committee and the Governance Committee and has also been a member of the Contract Negotiations team and the Wellness Committee. Ms. Carlson has been a resident of New Canaan for twenty-two years and has two children, both NCHS graduates.
Ms. Carlson was nominated by outgoing Vice Chair Penny Rashin. “Having ably led this Board for the last three years, Dionna Carlson needs no introduction,” said Ms. Rashin. “She has shown that she is fair minded, passionate about education, fiscally prudent, effective and forward looking. New Canaan schools and students have benefited greatly from her leadership. As Vice Chair Dionna will provide a useful continuity in our leadership.”
Jennifer Richardson was elected as BOE Secretary for her third consecutive term. She is the parent of four children enrolled in New Canaan Public Schools and a tireless volunteer for the New Canaan Public Schools. Prior to joining the BOE, Ms. Richardson served as Saxe Middle School’s Parent Teacher Council President and continues to serve on New Canaan High School’s Parent Faculty Association. She chairs the Scholarship Color Run and Post Prom and is a graduate of New Canaan High School, herself.
In her nomination of Ms. Richardson, BOE member Sheri West said: “We are a better Board because of her thoughtful nature, discipline and diligence.”
