New Teacher Orientation preps faculty for school year

A week before the new school year began, a group of teachers took part in an orientation program designed to acclimate them to New Canaan Public Schools. All these teachers are either brand new to the district or to the schools they are being assigned to, and the three-day New Teacher Induction program, led by NCPS Director of Human Resources Gary Kass, included everything from school culture and curriculum to crisis preparedness and digital technology in the classroom.

 

Here’s a quick look at this year’s new staff:

EAST SCHOOL

 

Kerri Morris - Psychologist - (LT Sub)

Kerri completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development / Family Studies from Cornell University.  She also earned an Ed.M. in School Psychology and a Ph.D. in School Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University.  Kerri holds a Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas and received an Advanced Certificate in Adult Psychotherapy from the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.  She has served as a psychologist and psychological consultant in several school districts and organizations, including NYC Public Schools, Chelsea and Lawrence Massachusetts Schools, and the Seed Center in Stamford.  Most recently she has been in private practice and consulting at Greenwich Public Schools.

 

Iliana Felton - Grade 3 - (LT Sub)

Iliana earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Brooklyn College.  She also earned a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport.  Iliana completed her internship and student teaching at West Elementary School.  Most recently she served as a Grade 2 long term substitute at West Elementary School.

 

SOUTH SCHOOL

 

Madison Mulhern - Grade 3

Madison holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the Pennsylvania State University.  She recently completed a professional development internship at Corl Street Elementary School in State College, PA.  Madison is a graduate of New Canaan High School and attended South School, where she completed an internship in a 3rd grade class in her final month of high school.

 

Kathryn Iapaluccio - Grade 3

Kathryn received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Western Connecticut State University.  She also holds a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from Post University and is pursuing school administrator certification at Sacred Heart University. She began her teaching career as a middle school Science, Language Arts and Religion teacher at Saint Joseph’s School in Danbury.  Most recently Kathryn has been an Elementary Education teacher at Geraldine W. Johnson School in Bridgeport.

 

 

WEST SCHOOL

 

Jennifer O’Connell - Reading Specialist        

Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Human Development from Boston College and a Master of Science degree in Remedial Reading and Language Arts from Southern CT State University. She has also completed administrative and language arts consultant certification programs.  Jennifer served for a number years as an elementary teacher before becoming a Language Arts Specialist at Stratford Elementary School in Fairfield, CT, where she has served since 2011.   

 

Allison Elwell - Speech Pathologist

Allison holds a B.A. in Anthropology from St. Lawrence University and Master of Science degree in Communication Disorders from Mercy College, plus a Graduate Certificate in Children with Special Health Care needs from New York Medical College.  For the past several years she has been an ELS instructor at the Mercy College Writing Center.  Since completing graduate externships and fellowships, she has served as a Speech – Language Pathologist in the Fairfield Public Schools.

 

Suzanne Heckt – Occupational Therapist

Suzanne received a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and Master Degree of Occupational Therapy from Nova Southeastern University.  She has served as an occupational therapist in a variety of organizations, including the Advanced Center for Rehabilitation Medicine in Norwalk and Constellation Health Services.  She also served at Health Service Executive in Ireland.  Most recently she has been a school based occupational therapist in the Wilton Public Schools.

 

SAXE MIDDLE SCHOOL:

 

Ann Wronski - SLP (.6 FTE)

Ann received a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Education at Fordham University and a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology and Reading from MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA.  Ann began her career working for the NYC Department of Education, and then for private practices. She is familiar with the New Canaan Public Schools as she served as an SLP briefly at West and New Canaan High School.  Most recently, Ann has served as an SLP in the Scarsdale Public Schools.

 

Ashley Walsh - Science

Ann received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and General Science from Boston College and a Master of Science in Education: Science Education K-8 from Walden University. Ashley began her career teaching Grade 3 at Isaac Shalom Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY. Since then, she has served several roles at Coney Island Prep Middle School, including Grade 5 and 6 teacher, Living Environment teacher and most recently, Science Content Leader.

 

Rachel Kiley - Math

Rachel earned a B.A in Secondary Education and Mathematics from the University of Rhode Island. Rachel completed her student teaching at Curtis Corner Middle School in South Kingston, RI and at Toll Gate High School in Warwick, RI.  Most recently she has served as a long-term substitute Math teacher at Saxe Middle School.

 

Maria DeRobertis - Special Education          

Maria received a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from Salve Regina University as well as a M.S. in Special Education Adolescence 7-12 (concentration in Autism) from Long Island University. Maria completed her student teaching at Cranston Calvert Elementary School in Newport, RI.  Most recently, she has been a teaching assistant at Saxe Middle School.

 

Samantha Gagliano - School Psychologist

Samantha holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Gettysburg College as well as an Ed.M. in School Psychology and M.A. in Educational Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University.  Samantha has completed several practicum and fieldwork experiences, including fieldwork at Xavier High School in New York and practicum at the Dean Hope Center for Psychological and Educational Services. Most recently, she completed an internship at Woodmere Middle School in Hewlett, NY.

 

Michael Tiscia - Health          

Michael received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Eastern Connecticut State University and is pursuing a Master degree Exercise Science: Physical Education and Health from Southern Connecticut State University.  In addition to substitute teaching, Michael has served as a basketball coach in several organizations, including at New Canaan High School. Most recently, he completed his student teaching in the Darien Public Schools. 

 

 

NEW CANAAN HIGH SCHOOL

 

David Gusitsch – NCHS Assistant Principal

David received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from CCSU and a Master of Science degree in Sports Management from Western Illinois University.  He also holds a sixth year degree in Educational Leadership from Sacred Heart University.  Early in his career he taught Health and Physical Education at Brookfield High School. Since 2003 he has served various roles in the Westport Public Schools including interim assistant principal at Coleytown Middle School and the K-12 Department Chair for Physical Education and Health.

 

Joanne Gerardi - Special Education

Joanne earned a BA degree in Education as well as a Master of Science degree in Special Education from The College of New Rochelle.  Joanne began her career as the REACH Coordinator at Pelham High School.  Since 2001, Joanne has served may roles within the New Canaan Public Schools, including substitute teacher, Special Education tutor and ESY teacher, Afternoon Instructional Program teacher and Special Education Department administrative assistant. 

 

Lindsey Rossen - SLP (.5)

Lindsey holds a BA degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Indiana University as well as a Master of Science degree in Speech/Language Pathology from Rush University.  Lindsey began her at Easter Seals in the Birth to Three program and then moved on to Norwalk Hospital. In recent years she has been a consultant, most recently serving the New Canaan Public Schools.

 

Katie Spaulding - Latin/French (.6)   

Katie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in Education and Curriculum from The University of Connecticut.  She completed her student teaching at Norwalk High School, teaching French and Latin classes and accompanying her Latin students on a tour of Roman Italy.  Prior to teaching, Katie was an Assistant Fashion Designer as well as a Merchandiser/Buying Consultant.  She is returning to a French and Latin position at New Canaan High School which she held from 2011-14.

 

April Kish - Earth Science

April received a BA degree in Environment Studies from Fordham University as well as a Master of Arts in Secondary Science Education, Biology, from Teachers College, Columbia University.  April served as a Science teacher at Boston Area Health Education Center and at Fordham University Lincoln Center.  Most recently, she has been an Earth Science and Living Environment teacher at New World High School, Bronx, NY.

 

Janet McGowen - Chemistry

Janet earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz.  Prior to teaching, Janet was a Senior Mask Designer for Intel Corporation.  Her first teaching assignment was as a science and math teacher at Liberty Common High School in Colorado.  She also taught ELL Math and Math in the Poudre School District in Colorado.  Most recently, she has been a long-term substitute teacher at NCHS.

 

Christopher Satterlie - Special Education

Christopher earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Education in Social Studies from the University of Minnesota.  He also holds a Master of Arts in Special Education: Emotional Behavioral Disorders from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Christopher has served as a science and social studies teacher and instructional specialist in the Minneapolis Public Schools.  Most recently, he has been a Special Education teacher in the Scottsdale Unified School District in Arizona.

 

Jacquelynn Aldrich - Spanish (LT Sub)          

Jacquelynn received a Bachelor of Art degree in Spanish from University of Mary Washington. Her first teaching assignment was teaching Spanish in Stafford, Virginia.  She then taught ESL in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Most recently, Jacquelynn has been a Language and Literature teacher in the Buenos Aires International Christian Academy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

 

Ashley Lewis - Special Education

Ashley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Connecticut.  She also earned a Master of Science degree in Education from Mercy College and a Master of Science in Math Education from Western Governor’s University. Ashley became a Special Education teacher for New York City Teaching Fellows before moving on to a Special Education teaching position at Michelangelo Middle School in Bronx, NY.  From there, she taught Special Education at Rogers International Baccalaureate School in Stamford, CT.  Most recently, she has been a Special Education teacher at Veterans Park Elementary School in Ridgefield.

 

Jennifer Pacelli - Library Media

Jennifer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Connecticut.  She also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Sacred Heart University. She is currently pursuing a 6th year degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Technology Leadership from Concordia University.  Jennifer has held several teaching positions, including Grade 3 in Trumbull, Technology in Derby, Elementary Technology in Danbury and Technology Integration in Trumbull.  Most recently, she has been a Lead Technology Integration Specialist in the Stratford Public Schools.

 

Donna Burns - Tech Integrator

Donna earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Southern Connecticut State University.  She also earned a Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology from Western Connecticut State University. She is currently pursuing a 6th year degree. She began her career in the East Haven Public Schools as an integrated Language Arts teacher.  Donna has served several roles in the Bethel Public Schools including Library Media Specialist, Administrative Intern, K-12 Coordinator of Computer Science and Library Media and Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator.

 

Nancy Stevens – ACES - Academic Center for Excellence and Support Supervisor

Nancy received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Fairfield University.  She also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching (Secondary Social Studies) from Fordham University. She began her teaching career at Yorktown High School as Social Studies teacher. Nancy moved on to teach Social Studies in the Rye Brook and Armonk school districts. Most recently she has been an adjunct professor, teaching American Government at Norwalk Community College.

 

DISTRICT

 

Sarah Dunn – BCBA - Board Certified Behavior Analysist

Susan received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Connecticut as well as her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and Applied Behavior Analysis from Arizona State University. Sarah began her career as an ABA therapist at the Institute of Professional Practice in Meridian and moved on to become the lead behavior therapist and behavioral consultant The Seed Center. Most recently she has been a program supervisor at Applied Behavioral Interventions in Bronx, NY.
