"The Greatest Show on eARTh" comes to NCHS

The night of April 27 will be a very special time for a group of New Canaan High School seniors: it marks the opening of “The Greatest Show on eARTh,” the 30th Annual Senior Art Exhibition. The NCHS gallery, located at the entrance of NCHS, 11 Farm Road in New Canaan, will exhibit senior work and feature twenty-six graduating seniors, working in a variety of media including drawing, painting, photography, digital media, sculpture and film.

Senior Art Show The Opening Reception will include live music and complimentary refreshments and take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, April 27. The exhibition will be on view through June 12, 2017.

Each year, the Senior Art Show allows students to generate one-person exhibits that are entirely their own. NCHS’s senior show is unique in that it challenges any senior to present his or her work as a one-person “retrospective” of art that can be drawn from anything the student has done throughout their high school years.

The organization of this exhibit is meant to draw attention to each student’s individual portfolio and distinctive artistic style with an emerging personal “voice”. This process challenges students to evaluate and display their work; it is both exciting and demanding for these artistically talented students, many of whom will continue their artistic development on the college level in the fall.

senior art show-2 The students are responsible for planning and organizing the event with the advice given from their art teachers, Jeanne McDonagh, Jennifer Sinski and Kimanne Core. The student coordinators for the exhibition are Hannah Gelnaw and Luis Gonzalez-Miranda. Student responsibilities include creating a title and logo for the exhibit, planning the opening reception, generating publicity, and installing the show.

The senior exhibit will also give three seniors an opportunity to have their work purchased for the NCHS Fritz Eager Foundation for the Art Education - Art Collection.  The purchased works of art will then be on permanent display throughout the high school and the NCPS district offices. This art collection began in 1969 in the memory of New Canaan High School art student Fritz (Frederick) Eager. The selection committee is comprised of members of the high school staff and a committee of professional artists.

Featured in this exhibit are the NCHS student winners of the 2016 and 2017 National & Connecticut Scholastic Art Awards, Teen Visions Best in Show Awards from Sacred Heart University and winners of the Carriage Barn’s Annual Photo Competition. They are: Ellery Baran, Elizabeth Bochicchio, Dayton Camaren, Jack Dahill, Matthew DePalo, Hannah Gelnaw, Anne Greer, Anna Lysenko, Connor McDevitt, and Samantha Pepe.

Also presenting their work in New Canaan High School’s 30th Annual Senior Art Show are Lukah Aguilera, Amy Chu, Courtney Coutts, Jack Dahill, Maria Fagerstal, Casey Gertsen, Luis Gonzalez-Miranda, Evelyn Jensen, Austin Hill, Hazel Montano, Adrianna Morina, Aurelie Moutran, Bailey Reehl, James Sweet, Joshua Vindas, Tyler Walker, and Sophia Welch.
