Welcome to West

Welcome to West!

We are excited to begin another great year at West! This year, our district-wide focus on Emotional Intelligence is driving our work in the area of Social and Personal Learning. Our West School Learning Community Growth Goal will integrate the RULER concepts into our day to day experiences with one another.  Each classroom will be developing a “Charter” that encompass the way students want to “feel” when they are at school. The Classroom Charter will differ among our various classrooms and will reflect our school charter, which is displayed in the front lobby.

We will be using our weekly Monday “Morning Meeting” for this important work and faculty will be using the book “Chrysanthemum” by Kevin Henkes as the mentor text for instruction. Classroom lessons were designed by our district’s Emotional Intelligence Implementation Team, overseen by our Student Supports Coordinator, Dr. Susan Bliss and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Jill Correnty. The lessons will provide assured experiences for students across the district.

Our Whole School Student Learning Goal is focused on “Design”. How can we design instruction to promote student independence and interdependence? Faculty will develop a deep understanding of our students and their unique needs. We will create educational experiences that “matter” for students? Our goal is for students to always be engaged in activities that are meaningful and relevant, driven by personal  interests, whenever possible. By providing appropriate supports and scaffolding to build independence and confidence, students will be able to work collaboratively, independently and individually to analyze, question, and synthesize new learning. Teachers will focus on using a gradual release approach that supports the acquisition of these skills. We will continue to strengthen the “workshop model” across content areas through the use of authentic learning tasks.

Our faculty takes pride in their own professional learning. We have faculty study groups reading selected professional texts to build comprehension skills through a shared reading framework. Another group continues their work on productive mathematical discourse through the use of “Intentional Talk”. Our School Leadership Team is exploring the book “Engaging Children: Igniting a Drive for Deeper Learning” (by Ellin Keene) to build upon our use of higher order thinking. As a Professional Learning Community, we continue to integrate 21st century skills into all that we do.

Finally, our West School PTC is a critical partner in supporting student learning. They seek to create and maintain an active working relationship among parents, teachers, and our administration so that each may contribute effectively to the education and welfare of our children. Our PTC prides itself on  keeping parents informed of the programs and policies of the school in order to promote a continued exchange of ideas and information. Every member goes to great lengths, in a tireless manner, to enhance and supplant the educational goals of our school. We are grateful for a strong and supportive parent group here at West!
