After 44 years as an educator, with roles ranging from West Elementary School teacher to NCPS district coordinator – and, later, principal at West and at schools in Fairfield – to, currently, NCPS Cabinet Member and Director of Human Resources, Gary Kass (pictured above) recently announced his retirement in the following message sent to the NCPS community:

Dear Colleagues,

Today I write to you as I prepare for a new beginning as I plan on retiring from my position as the Director of Human Resources for the New Canaan Public Schools at the end of this school year.

My career began when I was hired as a first year teacher at West School, teaching sixth grade - my dream job! Over the next 18 years in New Canaan, I served as a classroom teacher, writing coordinator, Unit Leader, BEST/TEAM District Facilitator, Coordinator of Language Arts for the district and Principal of West School. I moved on to serve as the Principal at Timothy Dwight and Burr Elementary Schools in Fairfield for the next 19 years and have been fortunate enough to return to New Canaan to serve in this role for the last seven years. Each of these positions has brought unique joys, and I remain grateful for every experience I've had throughout my career.

A total of 44 years as an educator has gone by in the blink of an eye. Throughout this time, I have come to realize how fortunate I have been to work in a profession that has been so incredibly rewarding. This, as we all know, is the most important work on the planet! I have been the most privileged to have been a part of exemplary school districts and work with colleagues that put the needs of our students ahead of all else. I know that I will miss this great work that we do, and all of you.

I thank you for your kindness and support over the years and I wish you all the very best in the future.

Best,

Gary A. Kass
