• Welcome to the Saxe Music Website! 
  • Students entering Saxe must select from one of four music classes. Due to the sequential curriculum of our music courses, students are expected to remain in their music course through eighth grade. Descriptions of each course are below. Please visit the pages on the left for more information about each class and for teacher contact information. 

    𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗱
    Students enrolled in band may choose to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, alto saxophone or baritone horn. Students will learn instrument performance technique, develop music reading skills, and explore new musical concepts. Students are required to practice regularly at home and will participate in two evening performances during the year. Aptitude tests will be administered at the end of 5th grade for students interested in playing percussion, French horn, bassoon or oboe. 

    𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮
    Students enrolled in orchestra may choose to play violin, viola, cello or string bass. Most students in the New Canaan orchestra program begin playing in 3rd grade, but we also welcome beginners in 5th grade. Orchestra students will further develop playing technique, music reading skills and explore new musical concepts. As with band, students are required to practice regularly at home and will participate in two evening performances during the school year. 

    𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘂𝘀
    Students in the Saxe Choral Program will learn proper vocal technique to perform varied genres of music. Students will sing independently, in small groups, and in large ensembles. Additionally, students will learn sight-singing skills, including reading music notation and music theory. Students participate in two evening performances during the year.

    𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆
    In this class, students learn basic piano keyboard skills to perform musical excerpts by varied composers and musical genres. Students will also be expected to learn to read music. Using a combination of piano keyboard skills and computer software, students will also explore various instrument sounds and elements of musical composition. Students will be expected to purchase a 49-key keyboard and carrying case for at-home practice and in-school use.
