    Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year! I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe.

Over the past several months, the Food Service Managers at each school have received Covid-19 specific training through the ServSafe certification program.  This training provided managers with the information needed to modify their practices and protocols in a manner that enables the district to continue to safely prepare and serve meals to our students and staff.  In response to these enhanced health and safety guidelines, the food service staff will wear all appropriate PPE for the duration of their work inside the schools, there will be fewer choices on the menu, and cafeteria staff will wrap, seal and hand food to the students at all schools.

    Lunch

There is no increase in the price for a school lunch.  Elementary Hot and Cold Lunches are $3.50 and Middle and High School Hot Lunches are $4.00.

    Elementary schools

At the elementary schools, the hot and cold lunch meals continue to include whole fruit & vegetables, choice of milk, small juice or small water.  Hot and cold lunch options will be available daily, with the exception of Wednesdays during the onboarding period.  As in the past, teachers will take daily lunch counts for the elementary students in their classrooms. The school will communicate these counts to the cafeteria staff, and they will prepare and maintain food in accordance with ServSafe standards and guidelines.

Each elementary school will schedule student lunch periods based on the spaces within their schools. At the start of the school year, students will rotate their scheduled lunch period between the cafeteria/gym/large group area and their classroom. On the days when students eat lunch in their classrooms, the cafeteria staff will prepare, seal, place the food in cooler bags and deliver the meals to the individual classrooms.  There will be three types of cold lunches- Sandwich Lunch, Bagel Lunch and Sunbutter & Jelly Lunch. Beverage options are- 2% milk, Low- Fat Chocolate milk, water, 4 oz. orange juice. We ask that you review the menu with your child at least one day before to expedite the ordering process.  Each cafeteria/gym/large group area will:

    • have social distancing signage on the floor,
    • be setup to ensure that students eat with their classroom cohort and that there is appropriate distance between classroom cohorts,
    • that students sit behind a plastic barrier while eating, and
    • have a hand sanitizing station at each classroom/cohort location.

Students can remove their masks once seated; however, they must put it back on prior to leaving their seat.

    Saxe Middle School

All students will eat lunch in either the cafeteria or the auxiliary gym as assigned by the school administration.  If a student brings lunch from home, they will go directly to their team/cohort’s assigned area.  Students that purchase lunch will get their food in the servery.  The cafeteria and auxiliary gym will:

    • have social distancing signage on the floor,
    • be setup to ensure that students eat with their team/cohort and that there is appropriate distance between teams/cohorts,
    • that students sit behind a plastic barrier while eating, and
    • have a hand sanitizing station at team/cohort location.

Students can remove their masks once seated; however, they must put it back on prior to leaving their seat.

    New Canaan High School

All students will eat lunch in either the cafeteria, outdoor spaces or other areas as designated by the school administration.  Students that purchase lunch will get their food in the servery.  The cafeteria will:

    • have social distancing signage on the floor,
    • have designated seating at tables to ensure social distancing while students eat,
    • there will be a hand sanitizing stations at several locations where students eat.

Students can remove their masks once seated; however, they must put it back on prior to leaving their seat.

New Point of Sale (POS) System - Titan School Solutions

Our new Point of Sale System, Titan School Solutions is an all in one system. We are no longer using My Payments Plus and Horizon Solana Point of Sale Systems. The Titan Family Portal is where parents will make an online payment to their children’s cafeteria meal accounts, remotely monitor their children’s accounts, set up automatic recurring payments, set up low balance e-mail message alerts and submit an online application for the free and/or reduced meals program.

There is a fee of $2.60 per transaction.  Each transaction can be for either one child or multiple children within the same family. Please note that the district has rolled over all balances from Horizon Solana to Titan.

New Bar Code Scanners – Titan School Solutions

We have new bar code scanners with Titan School Solutions.  These units replace the four digit pin pads used by Horizon Solona.  Students will receive laminated cards with their student ID numbers printed on them for use when purchasing food from the cafeteria at the check-out registers. They will hold their card under the bar code scanner at the registers and their student lunch account will appear on the cashier’s POS screens.

Parents of students with allergies, please email me at michelle.santelli@ncps-k12.org  to schedule a meeting with our dietitian and myself. Our goal is to work with you to develop a plan that will enable your child to participate in the school lunch program.
