Degrees and Certifications:

Kate Dorfman

My name is Kate Dorfman and I teach orchestra for grades 5-8. I have been teaching at Saxe since 2008.

I began playing the violin at the age of five and viola a few years later, although I also love playing the cello and bass too! I attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where I earned my B.M. in Music Education, and the University of Michigan, where I earned my M.M. in Music Education. I have also completed Suzuki teacher training at the Hartt School. I am the principal second violinist of the Wallingford Symphony and perform regularly with the Greater Bridgeport Symphony.

My husband and I have three children - a daughter who plays cello, of course and 2 year old twin boys, who love to sing and dance, but aren't to be trusted with a fragile instrument yet!

Fun fact: In August of 2013, I performed with the Three-Penny Chorus and Orchestra on America's Got Talent with a light-up violin and bow.

About the Saxe Orchestra

  • Students enrolled in orchestra at Saxe may choose to play violin, viola, cello or string bass. Most students in the New Canaan orchestra program begin playing in 3rd grade, but we also welcome beginners in 5th grade. Orchestra students will further develop playing technique, music reading skills and explore new musical concepts. Students are required to practice regularly at home and participate in two evening performances during the school year.
