Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Laura Poidomani

I’m excited to be your sixth-grade science teacher this year. I have been a teacher at Saxe Middle School for 22 years.  Before Saxe, I attended the University of Connecticut, where I earned my B.S. and M.A. degrees in science and elementary education.  I have also worked for the Stamford Nature Center, Norwalk Maritime Aquarium, and the National Audubon Society. In 2017, I earned the United States Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Education. I am married, have two sons (8 & 14 years old), and many pets (a dog, 2 cats, a tortoise, fish, and a snake). My hobbies are fishing, gardening, and being a Yankee fan.

Teaching is more to me than just a job.  It is a commitment that I take very seriously.  I love working with students and they inspire me; I hope to do the same for you this year.  My goal, my mission as a teacher, is to help my students develop a positive attitude toward science and learning.  I want you to enjoy science now and be inspired to become a scientist in the future.  I want you to feel that you can make a difference in your world based on your knowledge of science.

My teaching philosophy is this:  I don’t simply teach you science.  I help you learn science.  You will have my full respect, understanding, and commitment and in all interactions, I will give you.  In return, I expect cooperation, caring, and commitment from you.

Throughout my years of teaching, I’ve realized that students who have the greatest academic success are those whose families are involved in their education. I hope that your family will be just as excited as you are when you come home with interesting facts and theories in science.  I am committed to working with you to make this the best year ever in sixth grade.
