ADVANCED PLACEMENT WORLD HISTORY I
(College Board Approved)
Grade: 9
Duration: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Application and Department Approval
Credit: 0.5 per Semester
This course will be offered over two consecutive years. Enrolled 9th graders will be required to take the A.P. History examination in May of their sophomore year. Similarly to Global History I, The roots and development of civilization are studied from human origins through the Columbian Exchange. Emphasis will be on a truly balanced coverage of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe.
Students will develop an understanding of historical concepts and develop analytical skills by using both primary and secondary sources as guides to the past. Rigorous reading and writing will be the norm. Students will be expected to develop skills which will enable them to undertake such critical tasks as: assessing primary data, evaluating arguments, handling diverse interpretations, drawing comparisons, and understanding historical context. The course places a heavy emphasis on the College Board’s AP Historical Thinking Skills.
