• SENIOR ENGLISH AND SPORTS IN LITERATURE

    Credit: 0.5 per semester

    Through a variety of contemporary fiction and non-fiction and film, students explore how individual and national identities are shaped through sports. Literature will be used as a lens to examine how athletics shape identity including; individual character; developing a sense of communal, regional and/or national  identity; while serving as an area  to  overcome racial, gender and socio-economic barriers. Assessments include literary analysis, a research paper and a cumulative independent final project.

    Possible texts: The Bullpen Gospels, Unbroken, Rose Bowl Dreams and The Boys in the Boat

    Students considering Division I athletics in college should consult their School Counselor before enrolling in this course
