What is unique and important about America? American Studies is designed to give students opportunities to explore and challenge the underlying values of American culture. A team-taught, interdisciplinary course emphasizing American literature, history, art and popular culture, this academically rigorous, co-curricular approach to English and history will combine classic texts with current issues in a student centered, experiential environment. The course may also include field trips to historical sites of interest, museums, and performances.
Students will write essays each quarter in addition to other assignments. All students will write two formal, fully documented research papers with source and a works cited list.
Texts: As per English Department requirements, students will, among other literary works, read an American play, The Great Gatsby and Huckleberry Finn. Students will also read multiple historical textbooks and documents.
