    Grade: 10 - 12

    Duration: 1 Semester

    Prerequisite: None

This semester course is a must for future parents and/or child care professionals. Students will develop an appreciation for the challenges of caregiving from birth through age twelve. The psychology-based curriculum includes the study of the physical, social, emotional and mental development of children. This discussion based class will cover current issues in child development including appropriate technology use for children, creating appropriate environments for children and health & wellness issues.

To apply their knowledge of child development, students will create a developmentally appropriate learning center for children ages two to four. Students will help to prepare, implement and reflect on the quality of their learning center in the New Canaan High School Preschool Program. For the culminating project, students design and create a take home learning activity for a child ages 6 to 12.

This course requires students to complete in-class assignments, child observations, lab safety checklists and a developmental learning activity for a young child.
