• New Canaan High School Post-Secondary Planning

    • Planning for options after high school actually begins in freshman year when counselors work with students to plan a strong college-preparatory curriculum by creating a four year academic plan and working with students to determine individual learning styles. We strongly believe that preparing every student for the rigor of post-secondary education is the best pathway for all future plans.

    • In the spring of students’ sophomore year, the process continues with a career inventory and instruction in using on-line college research. At this point, students are expected to be fully conversant with and maintain college planning activities through our support programs on Naviance.

    • Counselors also hold an important meeting for sophomore parents in May.

    • During students’ junior year an evening program for parents is offered to outline and advise on appropriate steps to take in the planning process.

    • This is followed in the spring with individual student/family appointments where plans are formulated for continued college research, college evaluations and visits, standardized testing plans and other questions.

    • September of senior year includes an instructional class for students on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of applying to college.

    • In mid-September, we hold a senior parent program to apprise them of the processes in place to streamline applying to college and to answer the myriad of questions that arise at this critical time.

    • Counselors then meet individually with seniors to determine a final application list, check on testing updates and gather information relevant to generating a letter of reference for college admission or a job search/alternate setting.

    • Counselors remain available for seniors throughout the year, ready to handle questions or help students work through or sort priorities relative to the college application process.
