Dance

  • Objective: Students will demonstrate communication, cooperation, compromise and the ability to share ideas and work together while creating a dance to present to their peers.

     

    Assessment: Grades 5-7 is teacher observation with the dance routine rubric; Grade 8 is the dance video presentation.

     

    Grading: Dance routine is worth a total of 10pts towards their PE grade.

     

     

    Dance Assignment: Grade 5

    Directions: In groups, you will be creating an original dance that will be performed at the end of this unit in front of your peers. You will form groups of 2-6 people and select a school appropriate song of your choice that needs to be approved by your teacher.

    The dance must include (2pts each):
    • Creativity: costumes and/or props
    • Steps: 5 different moves performed together as a group
    • Time: Dance is at least 1 minute long, 2 minutes max
    • Participation: ALL group members perform equally
    • Presentation: Everyone knows the steps and is on beat with the music

    ***This is the criteria on which you will be graded- 10 points***

    Signature Dance Move: “The Swim” [8 counts of the signature move as a group (1pt extra credit)

     
    Dance Assignment: Grade 6

    Directions: In groups, you will be creating an original dance that will be performed at the end of this unit in front of your peers. You will form groups of 2-6 people and select a school appropriate song of your choice that needs to be approved by your teacher.

    • Steps: 6 different moves performed together as a group
    • Time: Dance is at least 1 minute long, 2 minute max
    • Participation: ALL group members perform equally 
    • Presentation: Everyone knows the steps and is on beat with the music 
    ***This is the criteria on which you will be graded- 10 points***

    Signature Dance Move: “The Fist Pump” [8 counts of the signature move as a group (1pt extra credit)

     
    Dance Assignment: Grade 7

    Directions: In groups, you will be creating an original dance that will be performed at the end of this unit in front of your peers. You will form groups of 2-6 people and select a school appropriate song of your choice that needs to be approved by your teacher.

    The dance must include (2pts each):
    • Creativity: costumes and/or props 
    • Steps: 7 different moves performed together as a group 
    • Time: Dance is at least (1:15); 1 minute and 15 seconds long, 2 minute max 
    • Participation: ALL group members perform equally 
    • Presentation: Everyone knows the steps and is on beat with the music
    ***This is the criteria on which you will be graded- 10 points***

    Signature Dance Move: “The Floss” [8 counts of the signature move as a group (1pt extra credit)

     
    Dance Assignment: Grade 8

    Directions: In groups, you will be creating a DANCE VIDEO that will be presented at the end of this unit to your peers on the smart-board. You will form groups of 2-4 people. Music and video content must be school appropriate and needs to be approved by your teacher prior to due date. Your group will present your video to the class. You will need to work on this at home (homework), during class, and/or lunch and workshop to be prepared.

    The dance video must include (2pts each):
    • Creativity: costumes, props, special effects
    • Steps: 10 different moves performed together as a group 
    • Time: Min length is 1:30 (with at least 30 seconds outside of class); Max 2:30 minutes
    • Participation: ALL group members perform equally and have an equal role in putting the video together 
    • Presentation: shared via google DRIVE with your PE teacher PRIOR to due date; video is well put together
    ***This is the criteria on which you will be graded- 10 points***

    Signature Dance Move: “Gangnam Style” [8 counts of the signature move as a group (1pt extra credit)

     
    Make-up Dance Assignment: 

    - 5th Grade: Write a 1 page paper, create a 5 slide power-point presentation, OR make a collage of pictures on a poster board on a type of dance.

    - 6th Grade: Write a 2 page paper, create a 8-10 slide power-point presentation, OR make a collage of pictures on a poster board on a type of dance.

    - 7th and 8th Grade: Write a 3 page paper OR create a 10-12 slide power-point presentation on a type of dance.

    Please include the following:
    • Type of dance (ex: tango, salsa, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, etc.
    • Where and when the dance originated
    • Description of dance (also include photos in power-point)
    • Must be typed if completing the paper (double-spaced and times new roman font 12)
    • References (internet sites or books)
