Dr. Steven R. Clapp

Dr. Clapp joined Saxe Middle School July 1st, 2013 as an assistant principal and the grade-five administrator, the very position he holds today.  Prior to joining Saxe, Dr. Clapp was a Social Studies teacher at John Read Middle School (JRMS) in Redding, CT. During his 13 year tenure at JRMS he taught grades five though eight in the various Social Sciences offered to middle school students (US History I & II, World History, World Geography) as well as several special offerings (research, computers, study skills).  During these years and assignments Dr. Clapp honed his craft and understanding of middle school aged children, practices which he gleaned from a theoretical based education.

Dr. Clapp graduated from Moravian College in 1997 with a BA in Political Science, with minors in Sociology and Women's Studies.  He went on to the University of New Haven where he received a Masters of Education in 2000.  In 2013 his dissertation entitled, LEADERSHIP PRACTICES IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BASED INTERVENTIONS, was published.  He completed doctoral studies in 2014 with a degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Southern Connecticut State University.

Dr. Clapp grew up in the greater Boston area as a proud Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics fan.  He learned from these teams how to be a good winner, and a good loser (as all Sox fans are :)). He became a UCONN Huskies fan in 1990 during the men's first march to the Final Four (the Christian Laettner game still stings), he rarely misses a men's or women's basketball game and is a season ticket holder for the UCONN football team.

Through out it all, Dr. Clapp has developed a pervasive belief that, "ALL students, regardless of circumstances, will achieve at the highest levels if appropriately challenged and properly supported."  This core belief helps underpin the decisions, guidance, coaching, discipline, grievance, and the celebrations that come along with the middle school years.  He looks forward to working with all Saxe families to ensure that students are engaged, challenged, and supported.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to him should you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What supplies should I buy for my child? Does the PTC sell a supply packet?

    Posted by:

Each team of teachers has their own list of supplies, please check individual websites for a complete list.

We no longer subscribe to the PTC supply packet.  Because each teacher had various requests for supplies, the packets became daunting, and much of the material unused by the students.
